Auricular Acupuncture, Sports Injury Massage & Dry Needling - Consultation & Treatment with Brian Kennedy, Physical Therapist - Julie's Diary - Week 27

Hey all!!!! πŸ‘‹πŸ‘‹πŸ‘‹πŸ‘‹

It's week 27 as #faceofmint and I'm back in Kilkenny for a seriously jam packed morning!!!

Today marks the first day of Brian Kennedy N.M.T's physical therapy and sports injury clinic for #MondaysAtMint and I was really looking forward to meeting with him and having a chat about some recurring little issues that I sometimes have with my back and posture.

Having met with Brian, I immediately felt at ease. He has a very calming and kind manner.
We chatted for a while and he asked some questions to get a better understanding of where my issues were and what needed to be treated.
I explained to him that from time to time I can be prone to sciatica, which starts in one side of my lower back and shoots down my leg causing sharp darts of pain and discomfort.
It can be very painful and frustrating as nothing I do can seem to ease it, bar strong pain killers and to be honest, I'd prefer not to have to resort to that.
So, Brian showed me some fantastic stretches that will really help to release it if I do get it again πŸ‘πŸ™Œ

I often suffer with tension in my back, especially in my shoulders...
So Brian started with a deep tissue massage on the affected area using the techniques he would use in sports massage.

Generally, Sports Massage is the use of massage for the treatment and prevention of sports injuries but it is an overall deep tissue massage that targets problem areas and it is also used all over to help with on going flexibility of the body!
Sooooo, not only is it good if you are unfortunate to have an issue with an injury or whatever it may be.... It's good to note, that by having a sports massage regularly, it can also help to prevent you becoming injured in the first place! πŸ‘πŸ‘

It helps to speed up injury recovery by releasing unwanted muscle tension, increasing blood circulation & lymph flow, relieving swelling, reducing post activity fatigue aaaaand it increases performance by promoting flexibility and helping to prevent future injuries.

Definitely something to keep in mind for the fitness fans out there, or if you're "footy mad" like my other half πŸ‘¨βš½πŸƒ

Sports Massage Can Help With:

Ankle Injury βœ…
Back Pain βœ…
Groin Injury βœ…
Hamstring Injuries βœ…
Knee Problems βœ…
Muscle Tears βœ…
Muscle Weakness βœ…
Repetitive Strain Injury βœ…

As I said before. This is not only for sports people.... It is also a targeted deep tissue massage. So if you feel you may have a repetitive strain or are carrying a lot of tension etc... Then this could work wonders for you too πŸ‘Œ

During my massage, Brian could feel a lot of tightness and a build up of tension in both my shoulders so he suggested the "dry needling" treatment would be beneficial for me.

Dry needling involves the insertion of an acupuncture needle into what is known as a β€˜trigger point’ or area of tightness in the muscle. It is different to Traditional Acupuncture as the needle is inserted directly into the muscular trigger point and often results in a β€˜twitch response’ in the muscle followed by relaxation of thebuilt up tension.
Sounds promising right????

Now.... I'm not gonna lie.... Even with the prospect of any kind of relief, I was a little nervous about it πŸ™ˆπŸ˜―
I hadn't got a clue what was involved in it and to be honest, the words "dry needling" didn't sound very appealing, as you can imagine lol! πŸ˜‚

BUT..... I was willing to give anything a try if the end result would be pain relief and released tension 😩😩

Brian was so reassuring andprofessional and he focused intently on using the dry needling technique in the problem areas that I had in both my shoulders.
I could tell immediately when it reached the right area.
It almost felt like a little jiggle/vibration in my muscle followed by a very short tingling pulse going through it.
All of this was completely bearable and you can almost feel the release and relief in the area straight away.... Almost like the tightness just fizzled away!?!? πŸ™ŒπŸ‘πŸ™ŒπŸ‘

I did feel a little stiff for about a day after..... But after that, all I can say is WOWZERS!! The difference in my mobility in my arms, back and shoulders was unbelievable!
I wouldn't think twice about having this done again if needed!! 😊

During my session with Brian, he also used a technique called Auricular Acupuncture.

Auricular Acupuncture (or Ear Acupuncture) is a specialised therapy where points on the ear are treated through acupuncture.
There are over 200 acupuncture points on each ear πŸ‘‚πŸ‘‚ ...who would have thought it eh?! πŸ’

The outer ear acts like a switchboard to the brain, where each acupuncture point being treated, triggers electrical impulses from the ear via the brain, to the specific part of the body being treated.

It's honestly amazing in how it works!! πŸ‘
Each point treated releases endorphins which block pain receptors, in turn elevating levels of adenosine, which is a completely natural local pain reliever.

Auricular Acupuncture is amazing for the natural treatment of physical and psychological problems, such as;
Musculoskeletal disorders
Thyroid problems
Menstrual problems
Digestive issues
Allergies and skin conditions
Neurological and vascular problems
Pain relief

So.... This, used in unison with deep tissue/sports massage, dry needling etc, can help to ensure that full pain free movement is restored-and maintained.

If any of these treatment above might be something that you think might benefit you, then it would be worth making an appointment for Brians clinic in Mint and have a chat about what the best solution for your needs would be.
There is nothing to be nervous about when it comes to dry needling or acupuncture.... I've found that out for myself. The benefits out weigh any nervousness you might have... Believe me!! 😊😊 xx
