Acne & Oily Skin
What is Acne?
Acne is a common skin condition that causes pimples on the skin. It usually affects areas where hair follicles are located and acne can appear on the face, neck, back, chest and shoulders. Acne can affect anybody and is found most frequently in teenagers. It usually clears up but some people can experience acne, or develop it, into adulthood. Acne scarring can be a side effect for some people once cleared up.
Four main factors cause acne - oil production, dead skin cells, clogged pores and bacteria. Hair follicles become plugged with oil and dead skin cells, creating an environment where bacteria can thrive. If the clogged pore becomes infected with bacteria, inflammation results in the form of whiteheads, blackheads, pimples and lesions.
Hormones (especially during puberty and pregnancy), certain medications, and stress can trigger or aggravate acne.
